# The Scorpion and the Mirror

In a sun-baked desert lived a scorpion, feared by all for its deadly sting. One day, while seeking shelter from the scorching heat, it stumbled upon a small oasis. At the center stood an ornate mirror, left behind by travelers long ago.

Curious, the scorpion approached its reflection. "Who dares to challenge me?" it hissed, raising its stinger. The reflection mimicked its every move.

Enraged by this perceived threat, the scorpion struck at the mirror repeatedly. With each strike, its stinger chipped and dulled against the hard surface.

A wise old tortoise, watching nearby, spoke up. "Why do you attack your own image?"

The scorpion, breathing heavily, replied, "This impostor mocks me. I must defeat it!"

The tortoise shook his head. "What you fight is not an enemy, but a reflection of yourself. Your aggression has only caused you harm."

The scorpion, now unable to sting, realized the truth of the tortoise's words. It had been so quick to perceive threat and lash out that it had damaged its only means of defense.

From that day forward, the scorpion learned to pause and reflect before striking, understanding that sometimes, the greatest threat we face is our own hasty judgment.

TED Talks Science and Medicine: How to harness the ancient partnership between forests and fungi | Colin Averill

How to harness the ancient partnership between forests and fungi | Colin Averill
TED Talks Science and Medicine

If we want to better understand the environment and combat climate change, we need to look deep underground, where diverse microscopic fungal networks mingle with tree roots to form symbiotic partnerships, says microbiologist Colin Averill. As we learn more about which of these fungi are most beneficial to forest health, we can reintroduce them into the soil -- potentially enhancing the growth and resilience of carbon-trapping trees and plants. Hear more about the emerging science aiming to supercharge forest ecosystems, one handful of soil at a time.

Your closet is likely full of all kinds of materials -- leather, cotton, nylon and polyester, to name a few -- that contribute to fashion's sustainability crisis. Biomaterials investigator Dan Widmaier explains how we could look to nature for sustainable replacements for these much-used materials and introduces a leather alternative made from mushrooms that looks great and doesn't harm the environment. "We can make fashion sustainable, and we're going to do it with science," Widmaier says.

Huberman Lab: Dr. Charles Zuker: The Biology of Taste Perception & Sugar Craving

Dr. Charles Zuker: The Biology of Taste Perception & Sugar Craving
Huberman Lab

My guest this episode is Dr. Charles Zuker, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biophysics and Neuroscience at Columbia University and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Zuker is the world's leading expert in the biology of taste, thirst and craving. His laboratory explores the mechanisms of taste perception, focusing on how our conscious and unconscious processing of specific foods and nutrients guide our actions and behaviors. We discuss the neural circuits of taste, the "gut-brain axis," the basis of food cravings and the key difference between wanting (craving) and liking (perceiving) sugar. We also explore how taste perception relates to specific food satiety, thirst, to our emotions, and expectation. We also consider how sugar containing and highly-processed foods can hijack the natural balance of the taste and digestive systems. Dr. Zuker provides a true masterclass in the biology of taste and perception that ought to be of interest to anyone curious about how the brain works, our motivated behaviors and the neural, chemical perceptual aspects of the mind. From metabolism gummies to spicy foods, the Keto diet to intricate exercise routines—it seems there's always something that is being sold or promoted to speed up your metabolism. But do most of us even know what our metabolism IS? And is there any way to hack it (you know, so we can eat pizza all day and not stress about it)? In this episode, Dr. Jen outlines what science knows about this process and why the myths and misunderstandings about our metabolism's ability to change can actually do us more harm than good. This is an episode of Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter. 4 kinds of regret -- and what they teach you about yourself | Daniel H. Pink
TED Health

Regret is one of our most powerful emotions -- and also one of the most misunderstood. Over the past two years, author Daniel H. Pink has collected a trove of more than 16,000 regrets from people in 105 countries in an effort to better understand this mysterious emotion. He shares the key patterns that emerged (it all boils down to the same four core regrets, he says) and explains how to transform your own regrets in order to create the life you've always wanted to live. This talk and conversation, hosted by TED current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers, was part of an exclusive TED Membership event. Hear more from our host Shoshana at the end of the episode on what regret can teach us -- and when it's time to let it go.

I explain how to blunt sugar cravings through fundamental knowledge of how sugar is sensed, metabolized, and utilized within the body. I explain how sugar is processed through the digestive tract and nervous system and how both the taste and nutritive components of sugar can lead to specific appetite changes and cravings.
